Clio Mk2 1.5dCi noisy engine

Hi all,

I'm hoping someone might know possibly why my engine seems to have got very noisy of late. I made a recording here: Vocaroo | Voice message

The worst part is the extremely loud squeal when it starts up first thing in the morning and after being left for a while for about 5-10 seconds then clears. It gets louder when you rev so I try not to do so especially early in the morning when leaving for work! I had the cam belt and alternator belt replaced a couple of years ago and alternator belt is what I keep thinking as the more obvious cause for the noise.
It sounds rough generally but also runs smoothly at times but is much more like a tractor or old bus now.
My fear is head gasket or water pump which I know neither won't be cheap...
There's no drips or anything under the engine at all and last weekend I noticed the expansion bottle was empty (not sure how long for!) so I topped it up again to max but in all honesty maybe hadn't checked it for a year.
I asked my garage to listen to the engine and they thought it sounded ok and the loud noise seemed to have cleared too.

Any thoughts, suggestions or advice much appreciated

I can hear a "tractor"
Fairly typical diseasal and not something I'd worry about purely from that.

But what squeal ???

That was when it was warmed up, will have to try and record it in the morning when you get the squeal, most of the time it's a sort of chirping noise you can hear on there which increases with engine speed.

Re: Clio Mk2 1.5dCi noisy engine

well a squeal certianly sounds like the Aux belt slipping.
try and new one (tenner) and check the tension. if its still happening then could be the bearing on the alternator, AC compressor, or the tensioner itself.

Re: Clio Mk2 1.5dCi noisy engine

A loud squeal first thing is 90% the belt driving the alternator (fan belt in my generation - aux belt to you young-uns). After starting the load on the alternator is higher than normal, and the belt will slip (and squeal) until the charging current drops and the belt can handle the load on the pulley. Check this first.

If the squeal doesn't go away, look at the bearings or idler pulleys.
