2.0 DCi - Check Injection System

Hi everyone,

Here we go again ...

So I've had my Laguna Coupe for about 5 weeks now, just a week out of warranty. I've still got blue smoke on starting, which is annoying, but today it's developed a new disease.

Pulling off of a roundabout onto a dual carriageway, I went to overtake another car. The dash soon lit up orange, with the spanner, and the message 'check injection system'.

It seemed to go into limp mode, as it felt like I had no turbo and I couldn't rev any higher than 3000 rpm.

I pulled over and turned it off after a mile or so. I had to get some diesel anyway, and I put a bottle of Redex advanced cleaner in to see if that would help.

Turned it back on, and everything seemed fine; no warning lights etc. Anyway, I continued my journey, a good 30 miles, and everything was fine. I kept taking it through the rev range, no flat spots or anything, pulled brilliantly in every gear.

Couple of things ... I had a full service carried out a couple of weeks ago, and done 800 miles since. I checked the oil on the drive over the weekend and it seemed very thin and clear, not sure whether it was supposed to be like this. Whenever I have checked oil on my other diesels, it's always been jet black and thick.

I did a quick Google and some people were saying it could be oil dilution?

Any ideas?

Thanks guys

Re: 2.0 DCi - Check Injection System

Check injection and no power is limp mode.
Why is another question and intermittent faults can be a pain to troubleshoot.
May have been fuel system clogging a bit and redex may have helped.
Or may be something else.

Oil .
Assuming proper oil used, after 800 miles I would hope it is still clean, days of thick, black oils after a few miles have largely gone with fully synthetics.

Oil dilution?
You don't give an age but has the beasty got FAP (DPF) particulate filter system in exhaust ?

Re: 2.0 DCi - Check Injection System

Thanks for your reply, really appreciated.

It's a 58 plate, just turned 64000. Full service history, mainly with Renault. I don't think it does have a DPF. The little plate in the door just says Laguna Coupe 2.0 Dci , no mention of FAP . But not sure?

Still never got to the bottom of blue smoke on cold starts in a morning, could it be related?

oil dilution,, you would have more in, when measured on the dipstick.
As that means diesel has got in,....

Sometimes I wake up grumpy; other times I let her sleep

Re: 2.0 DCi - Check Injection System

Oil dilution is normally only an issue with FAP .
Some motors inject a little more diesel in when trying to regenerate to give something to burn.
If too much due to a problem regenerating, the excess diesel can get into oil .

With no FAP and as Ourkid says, if level not high on dipstick, isn't a worry.

Blue smoke on starting.
Diesel/paraffin smell or oily ?

Could be glow plug issue, worth checking them.
Not really needed to start a DCI but do control emissions including unburnt fuel on cold starts.

May be indicative of leaky valve stem seals. Monitor oil levels and see if it gets worse (or fixed with glow plugs)
