Scenic 1.5DCi surging / cutting out

Back again to the wonderful world of Renault Forums! My car has developed a weird bit of a fault today (and if you've been driving in Yorkshire or Derbyshire and come across a Scenic doing about 30MPH, that was probably me!)

So the problem: Was driving down the dual carriageway and put the car into 5th and accelerated a bit more to gain some speed. The car started surging / spluttering to which I eased off and had to drop down a gear. It then decided it no longer wanted to be a car and instead wanted to start a new life in Australia as a Kangaroo before eventually the engine cut out completely. With it being a stop/start button I couldn't just restart it without stopping the car. Stopped it and started it straight back up no problem.

Drove it back down the dual carriageway but the other direction (I was hoping to travel home via the M1 but didn't fancy breaking down on there!) and once again when hitting about 55MPH it started surging again but clutching it kept it running. Managed to get about another mile and when pulling off from a set of lights it started surging and then cut out again. Fast forward and I'd managed to drive about 20 miles albeit clutching it every so often as it was mostly downhill so the momentum kept it going but I didn't experience any surging (I was doing about 35MPH max) I then came to a rather steep hill which I had to go up! I managed to get up the less steep parts but as I came to the steeper bits I had to press the pedal harder ....... Kangaroo, die

I was then driving down a 50MPH road at about 38MPH and all was going well, a lorry came past at speed on the opposite side of the road ..... DIE, didn't even Kangaroo. Obviously when a lorry goes past, it kinda sucks all the air over to their side of the road so I'm wondering if there is a problem with the air intake. In the meantime, has anyone got any other ideas on things I could check?

It runs absolutely fine when it is running, no knocks, bangs, misfires etc. Starts absolutely fine as well and there's no blue, grey or white smoke (there is black smoke when you boot it with it being a turbo )

A 1.5 DCi shouldn't emit black smoke even during acceleration. Sounds like the engine is either getting too much fuel or not enough air. Check the air filter and the inlet plumbing is clean and secure. Also it would do no harm to check the EGR valve - a very common fault.

What madnoel10 said.

Also you said it cut out instantly. Does the lights go out as well? Just check that the battety connections are properly fit.

Prob not the case, but just to be sure.

Re: Scenic 1.5DCi surging / cutting out

I'm thinking possible fuel leak.
Possible blocked filter
Possible air inlet pipes collapsed
Possible air filter collapsed/clogged
Possible electrical
Possible ......
You get the idea.

It is get bonnet up and look for anything obvious.
I reckon a diagnostic and live data if nothing jumps out.
