My five door hatchback Laguna 1 facelift has windscreen washer pump that makes a noise but no water appears at front windscreen nozzles or rear tailgate nozzle. I therefore speculate that water is being pumped but there is a blockage or no hydraulic pressure in the fluid hose.
The reservoir content has been removed and replaced by clean water. The wiper scuttle has been dislodged so I could access the front nozzle's tee connector. The fluid hose to front nozzles is free of blockage, determined by applying pneumatic pressure via mouth. The fluid hose to reservoir pump was pressurised by mouth and appears to have either a blockage or a non return valve (not sure which or both is true). The Haynes Manual has been consulted, but there is no picture of the washer fluid reservoir or the washer fluid pump.
Has anyone had this problem and found a solution or replaced the washer fluid pump? Thank you.
Clogged/blocked jets
Clogged/blocked hose
Pump is not working up enough pressure.
Some form of leak
I would take off the hose from the washer pump -> the jets and use compressed air to clean the hose(s), you probably got some funky stuff that's clogging it. Don't use compressed air with the hose connected to pump/reservoir, then the problem will just come back.
If you don't have compressed air try to blow or use a thin wire (BE CAREFUL) to push through and then blow.
Then try the washer pump without the jets connected and if you get fluid out of it. It's probably clocked jets.
But it's totally possible that this could be faulty pump or the pump not getting right voltage (say if you got some sort of resistance in the wiring)
Hello RenBen1, thank you for your rapid response. There is nothing obvious to be seen. So the clogged/blocked hose scenario seems to be the most likely in your four sinners list. Looks like I will have get beneath the engine and remove the reservoir to find out what is happening. Kind regards.
Hello Dancingdad, thank you for your response. Water is not appearing at the two front nozzles or single rear nozzle. The nozzles pass air and are NOT blocked/clogged. I can see no water leak. I have no idea what the washer water reservoir or washer water pump looks like. The reservoir's electrical and hose connections are not normally visible and there are no pictures in the Haynes Manual. I do not know what valve is used to direct water to front and/or back. I am guessing that I will find a twin outlet pump and debris blocking the pump inlet. However, it is all a mystery to me at the moment. Looks like I will have to remove the reservoir to try and find out what does what and how to fix the problem. Kind regards.
if it's anything like the scenic it's in front of the right front wheel. remove the wheel liner to get to it. few clips and screws. i took the wheel off because it was way easier that way. the pump is located at the bottom of the tank. just pull it out and replace. as i said, not 100% sure it'll be the same on the laguna, so maybe someone can correct me if im wrong?! other way to locate it is have someone activate it while u listen where the noise comes from lol. pumps are dirt cheap so i'd start with that mate
Hello carsten1978, the Laguna RTi hatchback has its washer fluid reservoir placed forward of the steel wheel arch and inside the engine compartment. Normally I cannot see the washer fluid pump and its electrical and hose connections. Access is obtained by raising the front of the vehicle and from beneath, removing the splash guard from the bottom of the wing panel to expose the reservoir. The reservoir is lowered from beneath the vehicle having removed its upper and lower retaining bolts. Evidently, the washer fluid pump can be removed without removing the washer fluid reservoir. However, the Haynes Manual is vague on how this is undertaken. This is where a picture would be of considerable benefit. I have searched for, but did not find a youtube.com video on how to replace Laguna 1 washer fluid pump.
I agree that fitting a replacement washer fluid pump is ideal. However, I do not know what has been fitted. It could be aTwin Outlet Windscreen Washer Pump. The only way to find out appears to be by removing the washer fluid pump or washer fluid reservoir. Kind regards.
........... Evidently, the washer fluid pump can be removed without removing the washer fluid reservoir. However, the Haynes Manual is vague on how this is undertaken. .........
Honest, just pull the pump, held in by an o-ring/seal and a tight fit..... assuming same as on Scenic and many other vehicles.
Don't lie underneath when pulling. slight twist can help release it.
Don't lose the O ring, new pumps don't come with them.
Hello Dancingdad, thanks for your "Don't lie underneath when pulling." observation. Therefore the only process is to first remove washer fluid reservoir + pump from beneath the vehicle. Normally I cannot see the washer fluid pump and its electrical and hose connections. There is no access to the washer fluid pump from above engine compartment.
Thank you for your "Don't lose the O ring, new pumps don't come with them." observation. Kind regards.
+1 for this. I had the same symptoms on my 2003 Clio. Pull the pump, strip the shuttle valve and shave a little off the rubber valve. Really as simple a repair that you will find and the pump will be pumping like never before.
I can't speak for the Laguna but on the Scenic, you can feel the pump if not see it...Renault in their wisdom mounted it so it faces the bumper/front crossmember and is hidden.
But you can get a hand on it, twist (rock) and pull and it comes out..... with enough wire and pipes to get the pump out and to where you can work on it.
i'd imagine it's probably a twin pump and u don't need the reservoir to come off. as dancingdad said, just pull the bugger out lol. but you should be able to see it anyway once u remove the splash guard. while you're there u could always pull the hoses off it and activate it. that way you'll eliminate any blockage in the actual hoses. obviously if u get water coming out it's not the pump
Hello carsten1978, not sure what splash guard you are referring to. The Renault Engine Control Unit Siemens S113722103B is placed forward of the washer fluid reservoir and it is not possible to see anything beneath the opening of the washer fluid reservoir. The Haynes Manual does not say anything about removing the Engine Control Unit to expose the washer fluid pump. Getting to the washer fluid pump from within the engine compartment would be ideal, but I do not know if removing the Engine Control Unit is the correct process. Kind regards.
wheel arch liner lol, splash guard...same difference lol...take that off on the right hand side and it should be staring you in the face. the reservoir and the pump lol
easiest if u take the wheel off. has some clips which are hard to reach otherwise. and a few 8mm screws(i think they are 8's if i remember right). if the laguna is like the scenic the liner is in 2 parts, front and back. only need to take the front one off. can't be arsed walking to the car to look but i'm almost certain part of it is screwed to the wheel arch. either way, remove all the clips, they just pop out. if u break them they sell'em on ebay for next to nothing. it's easy enough to do. i really hope renault weren't stupid and changed positions from car to car or it wont b there.
Hello carsten1978, yes, Renault have changed the location of the washer fluid reservoir from car to car. Comparison (read across) with the washer fluid reservoir located inside the liner of the scenic wheel arch is not appropriate.
Laguna 1 has the washer fluid reservoir in the engine compartment and forward of the o/s wheel arch. The Laguna RTi 2.0L 16v model has engine management unit (EMU) on a bracket which is placed forward of and obscures the washer fluid reservoir except for its filler opening. Hello Nottnoc, washer fluid reservoir is located beneath Laguna 1 engine compartment, forward of o/s wheel arch. Removing the Laguna 1 bumper serves no purpose.
