Megane 2000 - Cambelt replacement

Hi guys i recently bought a 2000 Megane sport alize 1.6 16v ,when i bought it the previous owner said he had replaced the cambelt himself at 70,000. There was no receipts/ paperwork to back this up. Its done 98,000 now and put it in for a service to get it checked over and in general the mechanic said it was in good condition but recomended i replace the cambelt, as he said the car still had the original water pump which would suggest the cambelt hadnt been changed. Now in a bit of a dilemma as to whether to replace it or not, mechanic said its hard to tell if it has been replaced but most garages would do the water pump at the same time. Is it easy to tell if the cambelt has been changed ? Obviously reluctant to part with the 200 quoted for the belt/pump to be changed but i know im taking a big risk if the cambelt hasnt been changed any advice greatly received guys thanks

TBH if it still has the original pump then you're still taking a big risk. The pumps have been known to fail and take a new belt with them, hence it's advisable to get the pump changed at the same time.

Personally I'd get the lot done for peace of mind, if you have the pump replaced, then the cost of the belt kit isn't that much extra

Pat thanks have to admit i didnt think of the pump going but the other way around , if thats the case it does sound sensible to do it ! Does the rough quote of 200 sound about right ? I think i understood the mechanic right in that it would be the belt and pump replaced for that, sorry just have no idea of if that sounds about right

I think so, but it's been a while since I had mine done. I'm sure that if you search the forum for timing belt you'll find posts of what has been paid for this job

If I were you I'd make sure he fits a belt kit (with the tensioner) not just a belt.....sorry I know, more expense
