Renault Clio Mk1 Cambelt Question?

I was on the way to my girlfriends house today when i began to hear a really loud squeaking and a smell of burning rubber from the engine.
I pulled into a garage nearby as soon as i could and they reckon it could be the cambelt.
Now as far as i know, i didnt think cars would even start if the cambelt had gone?
I know they turnover but dont start.
My car still starts now (after being towed to my gf's by an AA man) and he recommended starting it when it cooled down completely.
He said if it started its most likely the water pump seized, is the water pump connected to the cambelt on a clio mk1?
Also am i right with the cambelt information about the car not starting if it snaps?
thanks in advance,
Ashley

If the cambelt breaks, then the engine definately won't run.

However,if one of the idlers/tensioners has seized, then it will do exactly as your is,the belt will still rotate but it will gradually melt it's self.Depending on type,it could be the water pump, but on some 1.2 types the water pump is driven by the teeth on the belt and not the smooth back of the belt.If it was the teeth driven pump, then I suspect that this would ripped the teeth of the belt which would have caused the same problem as if the belt broke.

It sounds to me like you've had a very lucky escape.:)

update on my car, i should be gettin it fixed june 27th :d
finally!
Got some prices for the jobs to get it fixed, first place i rang up wanted £500 just for a water pump and cambelt kit! and that was BEFORE labour!
So i rang around a bit more and managed to get a price for the cambelt kit, the water pump, the labour and free antifreeze etc thrown in: £192 all in!
Which i thinks pretty good :)
Ill let people know how i got on and whether it was the problems we thought when i get it fixed :)
