I am not sure what system they were using either, but they were saying the calipers should wind back on their own without the need for a tool
The link to the TRW tool that Meganeman put up ssaid that the tool rewinds the handbrake THEN the pistons are pushed back like front calipers.

I'm not sure by any means but it sounds like your garage aren't either.
