I've been involved in more then a few fuel tank production facilities..both steel and plastic and never come across this as an issue.
Yes they can bend or expand and the plastic ones can creep (slowly deform under load) but if anything, any creep would try to force them off the mounting centres when they are full. When empty, they should creep back to original sizes which is what they were when they were bolted on at the production line.
