If brake fluid changes have been neglected and the piston is almost at its maximum travel the reason you are having trouble is because its stuck slightly.
Once you get past the initially sticking, it will wind back in easy usually.
It isn't easy though, a scenic I did was like that, I removed the pads, bolted it back to the carrier... and secured the sliders with cable ties so I could get much more force behind it with a pair of long nosed pliers while turning... eventually it went, and it went in easy once I got past the first bit.
That's where brake rewind tools come in handy... ive managed for years without one.. like said I didn't really understand what the fuss is about.. long nosed pliers and brute force gets them back in fine... although I will admit with the tool it is easier and makes you wonder why you didn't buy 1 years ago... but it is not necessary.
