Re: Megane 2002 1.4 brake issues
Sounds like you have slightly warped discs on the car, probably the front, and a binding rear caliper on the nearside rear.
The warped discs will do no harm but if you can't live with the problem you can sort it by renewing the discs & pads.
The rear calipers are dual functioning, the work when you press the brake pedal and also when you apply the handbrake.
The handbrake part gives problems as water finds it's way into the handbrake mechanism and causes it to seize up. This results in the handbrake not working well and when it is released it doesn't come off fully and binds, hence the sound and heat you have noticed.
Either replace the caliper with a good 2nd hand one or get a reconditioned caliper.
You could strip and rebuild the caliper but that depends on your mechanical ability.
Thanks for your advice and it makes total sense. I wasn't actually sure if the rear brakes were discs or drums (yeah, I've really not looked properly yet).
If it's a seized caliper then I'll need to get a 2nd hand or recon as rebuilding it is far beyond my ability although I did manage to change the wiper blades today
