OK - on my 1998 Scenic, I've just changed the batteries in both remote keys in connection with the almost-flat battery problem my wife had. The batteries are 2 x CR2016 per key at 2 each from Maplins, Tesco etc. It's worth spending 8 in the first instance to make sure that it's not a weak signal from the key that is causing your (mum's) problems. If you change the batteries fairly quickly, the keys will NOT require re-coding (mine didn't); I'd changed the batteries in "my" key about 4 years ago but the wife's key still had the originals in them (at over 7 years old). Without the correct remote operation, the immobiliser will not cut out and you won't be able to start the car.

2014 Captur dCi EDC; 2014 Ka 1.2 Zetec; 2015 C-Max 1.6 TDCI
