Check that the cambelt has been replaced within the specified times.

Check that there are no coolant leaks from the water pump.

Look behind the exhaust manifold. If there is oil running down behind it and onto the Cat then the headgasket is leaking. This is a very common problem on this engine as the High pressure oil feed to the head runs too close to the edge of the gasket and over time starts leaking.
This problem will progressevly get worse, and can lead to oil dripping onto the Hot cat and a fire is possible.

The Exhaust manifold have a tendancy to crack. Easily replaced at a cost or welded to repair it. If you could remove the manifold heatshield, you can check for the cracks and it will allow you better visibilty of the possible oil leak as advised in No 3.
