Given the option, I'd have gone for 'yes, but I think they look stupid.' That and the shin-bashing thing were the main reasons why I went for a detachable.

It's always pained me to stick a conventional towbar on a brand new car. Though the cars don't stay brand new for long, so maybe it isn't worth the expense of the detachable for the sake of a couple of months.

For Scatz: How did someone else's towbar make a mess of your car? Was the accident your fault or theirs? The worst I've ever done on someone else's car was crack a number plate (squeezing the Mazda into a tight space behind a Volvo, and I hadn't noticed that the Swede had a bloody long swan-neck sticking out

My own towbar on my second Lag yomped the bumper of the BMW that hit it, to the point where the bumper had to be ripped away from the back of my car (I was left with a bit of it stuck there afterwards.) People kept telling me how lucky I was that the towbar had saved more damage to the car. By my reckoning, I'd rather have had more damage to the car and less damage to my neck - the whiplash was still giving me problems several years later. I reckon that's about the best reason not to have one unless you need one.

I also had an old fella rear-end one of my Lags in his Fiesta. It wasn't much of a bump and there was no damage whatsoever to my car, but it left a lovely towball shaped dent in the metal skirt under the bumper on his.

I considered a trailer for tip runs, But storing it is a problem, and if I take a few seats out, I got a van anyway!

I've had one on my last 2 cars, I use it to tow a camping trailer.

The detachable ones are nice, but a bit more expensive if iirc

Tigz, mine came with a rubber shroud that covers the whole thing, bolts an all. It still hurts when you crack your leg on it, but nowhere near as much
