The wind noise is not notiecable unless it is very windy and certainly not audible below 70mph. Even then it's barely noticeable. I doubt it makes very little difference to fuel economy, as the bars are profiled and run the length of the car so there isn't that much wind resistance.
ALthough as said - don't bother unless you want to fit roof bars to them. You can buy roof bars from Thule etc to fit the SportTourer without the longitudinal rails fitted.
That may be a cheaper alternative for you.
