That'll be because the headlamp unit is seen as a trim item (and isn't covered on that age of car) - sounds crazy I know, but you may be eligible for a goodwill contribution from Renault (I think the dealer should be able to apply), you may not get full recompense, but if you pay even just a little bit - you'll get a full parts warranty on the replaced item.

I used to work in Ford UK's Out-of-warranty department.
