Re: Clio I running gear hum/rumble. HELP!!!
Detecting a noisey wheel bearings can be difficult even for the experts - many have ended up replacing the wrong one at times. To improve my chances of diagnosing which one I bought myself an engineers stethoscope (cost £6-00).
When I last took my now defunct Clio to MOT there was a noisey wheel bearing but as long as it doesn't have excessive wear or play then it will not fail the test.
Yep, I fully understand and agree with the point about passing the MoT. What really bothered me was that they said they had no idea what the noise was! I'm not a trained mechanic by any standard but I was fairly sure it was a bearing until I was given doubt by the professionals. A basic knowledge of physics suggested to me which side the problem was on when the noise lessened or even stopped during left hand cornering because when turning left centrifugal force causes the load to shift to the right thus relieving the left from maximum pressure.
Oh by the way, they took out the strut to hub bolts whilst fitting a new drive shaft boot and put them back in the wrong way round!
I think I have found a reliable workshop now for the stuff I can't do myself and I hope my experience with this job will be useful to others.
