Meg,you are very wise to check the bonnet catch on your Clio.
Make sure that the emergency catch(the one you release from the outside of the car when opening the bonnet) springs back when operated.The problem seems to be that the plastic catch seizes to the metal pin it's attatched to,so if the bonnet doesn't close properly and the main catch isn't shut properly,the emergency catch doesn't stop the bonnet from opening at speed.
Lubricate the pin in the emergency catch,make sure it moves/springs back easily,and you should be fine.
Edit:As Chris says,when shutting the bonnet,drop the bonnet from a reasonable height so it slams shut,and pull the leading edge of the bonnet up to make sure it's locked down properly.
