Seal unit with stanard sealer to prevent dirt entering unit
When you say the very back of the strap, where do you mean as there isn't a visible strap?

I had thought of this before but wasn't sure where to drill it without doing damage. Also a hole is left where water will get in, but a rubber bung of some sort could be found to fit I suppose.

Re: Passenger 'door strap' clicking

If the Scenic is like other cars, there should be the top and bottom hinges, the strap would be the metal bar that is located midway between these hinges. One end of the strap is fixed to the bodywork/door jamb while the "free" end enters into the door cavity. Where the strap enters to door cavity it runs between a couple of pinch rollers, these rollers grip into the strap indents which give the staged door opening.
Unfortunately the rollers go dry and can seize creating a grating/click noise.
Keeping the rollers lubricated helps the smooth operation of the components.
To help the operation run good I oil the straps and hinges at least once a month.

The triangular piece of pie shaped unit is the check strap.
Drill where it cannot be seen when you open the door. This is only so people can't see a drill hole. You only have to make a small hole. You don't have to drill deep
