That must've been worrying, but as you say - worse if someone had been behind you.
I can't honestly say I've heard of this happening, it may have just worked itself loose over the years.
I would call it a rear spoiler / tailgate spoiler - found a few on
, naturally the majority are hatches, but there are ones available for estates. It might also be worthwhile performing an online parts search - you might find one in the correct colour, which would save you having to paint it.
When fitting the replacement, it may be an idea to either use threadlock or some PU adhesive such as Tiger Seal to give extra bracing/support.
