Towbar Fitting Problems.....

I'm trying to fit a towbar to my 2002 Scenic and identifying the chassis holes is a problem....
I have found the ones on the side rails but just cant see where the ones are on the rear cross member.... I've searched the threads for similar posts and there are a few but nothing to say where they are.... one of the posts shows the main bar suspended from two lugs by the spare wheel well but these look way to flimsy to be right. The instructions mention captive nuts into the chassis and these are the holes that i cant find....are they behind the bumper? does anyone have any photo's of a fitted towbar or can anyone tell me the exact(ish) location of the rear cross member fixing points... i shouldnt have to drill the crossmember or remove the bumper according to the manual... its the part where the angled bracket attaches to the towbar then to the chassis.

any help gratefully recieved

Re: Towbar Fitting Problems.....

have you tried contacting the manufacturer of the towbar for fitting instructions?

Re: Towbar Fitting Problems.....

they are a pig to find, well done on finding the side mounting holes.

For anyone not familiar with fitting these towbars the chassis is covered in a thick black under guard meaning the holes are not visible. They are covered with silver tape then the hole lot is sprayed over.

Have you reached a point where you can loosely assemble the towbar and offer it up? I found the point of a compass was very useful when I did mine. If you can assemble the main cross member to the side bars it will give you an idea where to look.

Re: Towbar Fitting Problems.....

Hi Guys, thanks for the replies.

I have the installation instructions but they are so vague...

I am at the point where i can loosely fit the bar but when i looked yesterday i went along the cross member with a screwdriver and still couldnt find the holes on the rear crossmember. I really need to take a look at one that is installed and see how the angle bracket is fitted and what its fitted to. In teh pic below it shows the bar fitted to the light metal at the rear of the spare wheel indent. this does not look right to me as the metal is thin and with a caravan on the back i cant see it lasting long and believe it must be fixed to the rear crossmember for strength and stability as its only 1 fixing either side to the side rails.....
Someone must have a good picture of one installed

If you search on Google for towbar suppliers, some of them have the installation instructions available for download.
