It could probably be cleaned without opening it up, but the headlight would need removal from the car.
I would suggest pouring some vinegar in through the bulb holes, and giving it time to work plus periodically giving it a good shake to dislodge the waste material.
But as stated, a secondhand unit is probably your best bet if the car is in regular use.
You could give this method a try to clean your existing unit out though - you could sell it on and recoup the cost of the replacement unit?
