Scenic 2 (05) Tailgate Struts

So I need to replace the tailgate struts on my Scenic. I've seen the other threads in the forum, plus the guidance on sites like this one, which make it look and sound quick & easy (been bitten like that before !). On my car the top end of the struts is easy to get at, but the bottom end is hidden in a recess behind the lamp clusters - I can barely see the end fittings, never mind get any tools or fingers in there. Do I have to remove the lamp clusters, or is there an easier way to do this ? Really don't want to risk disturbing the water seals round the clusters if I can avoid it. If I do have to remove the lamps first, any idea where the fixing screws are - I assume there's more than the two plastic torx screws I can see ?
Thanks in advance.

Re: Scenic 2 (05) Tailgate Struts

You have to take the clusters off. It's fairly easy - 2 torx screws and then pull them off, there are 2 ball/sockets that hold the outside edges.
