Re: Jammed fuel cap - Renault Megane CC

I just wanted to say how helpful this was, the dealer had said about the leaver in the boot, but not exactly how to get to it, and they wanted 50 quid just to have a look. We've been trying to find the leaver for hours then found this post and the pictures were really useful, now been able to fill up, it doesn't seem to lock at the moment but as per a previous post I'd rather be able to fill it up when I need to so cheers.

Thanks for this post.

My Megane 1.4L petrol (2005) decided it was time to give up petrol. Unnerving, as any other electric problem I had with the car meant it more than likely didn't have a manual override.

Delighted to say I got the fuel flap open with little to a medium amount of fuss.

Stage 2 will involve trying to fix it myself. As always, it will be a challenge but why else own a renault if you don't like the odd challenge.

The fuel cap has decided not to unlock. Have any of you good folk out there had this issue and if so how did you get it sorted.

She is out of fuel and Renault have suggested we get it lifted to their garage to have a look at it.

There must be an easier way to fix it.

I tried the solution with the Ďleaverí in the other posts but it didnít work, the locking motor for the flap was really stuck and pulling the plastic leaver just started to bend it! Solution, remove the round flap cover from the filler flap by simply pulling it from front to rear with your nails of both hands, itís just held on by lugs and slides off easily. This reveals the black plastic filler flap, the rod that is pushed in and out to lock the flap is in the 9 oíclock position on the flap. The rod is pushed and pulled forwards and backwards by a small motor, not a solenoid. Pull the flap out a little and you can see the small locking rod, just push a large flat headed screwdriver into the gap onto the surface of the rod and force it left to push it back a little at a time towards the rear of the car. After about 8 attempts it moved back enough to open the flap. I then used the flat screwdriver blade to push the rod all the way back into the housing, I then removed the wiring connector from the locking motor inside the boot (detailed in the other posts) so that it didnít try to lock the flap again. Hope this helps, worked a treat from me.

Re: Jammed fuel cap - Renault Megane CC

interesting thread !

all you problems relate to poor servicing.

service manual says.
" lubricate all locks and hinges"

this includes hinges and locking mechanisms for: doors, bonnet, trunk/boot, fuel filler, glove box etc.

a mechanic at the garage would say you don't have to do these every time - but if they skip it every time - well you know what happens..!.

Re: Jammed fuel cap - Renault Megane CC

Mine never locked since I had it - as I found out one time purely by accident! So I bought an actual locking cap to replace the standard cap, which apart from being lockable (with its own key) is much better quality than the original must be said. The stock locking flap is just plastic so if anyone wanted your petrol all they need is a big screwdriver. Or strong fingernails as suggested above!
