Base colour, or metallic/pearlescent? It makes a world of difference.
On a base colour car, you're normally fine as long as the scratch hasn't gone through the primer. Just use the T-Cut and keep polishing until the scratch disappears. Take care if you're polishing over curves or ridges, as it's quite easy to wear right the way through the paint on protruding areas.
On a metallic or pearl, you're fine as long as the scratch isn't right the way through the lacquer. The same applies as above.
If it's into, but not through the base colour, then you'll usually get away with touching up the lacquer, waiting a couple of days, then using T-Cut to get a smooth finish.
If it's through to the primer or right down to the metal, I'd pay someone else to do it if you want it to look half decent.
