Replacing 2000 megane bonnet?

Hi All,

as the title suggests, i'm thinking about swapping out the bonnet on my megane...

The story goes, I had a cheap but cheerful 2000 megane in cherry red which i bought for 200... After covering 18000 miles and an unfortunate swipe with a transit van in central london, she has seen better days!

Anyway, a week or two ago I was window shopping at the local independent garage, when i spotted a 2000 megane in cherry red, full mot and 3 months tax, clutch replaced 10 months ago and part S/H for 500. I couldn't resist!!

So, I now have 2 meganes, and the plan is to put together one top notch car out of the two I have

The new car has some minor chipping and peeling, and a 5p sized rust spot on the bonnet. What i'm wondering is - how difficult am I going to find it to swap the bonnet over (I'm relatively new to all this!)

All advice greatly received, and parts may be forthcoming in the near future

Re: Replacing 2000 megane bonnet?

Hi there.

Swapping a bonnet isn't very difficult at all - what is more difficult is avoiding damage to the bonnet, wings or screen during the transfer.

You really need a few pairs of hands and do this on a day with very little wind.

If your washers are fitted into the bonnet, they will need unclipping prior to swapping, and place old duvets along the tops of the wings/bottom of the screen to avoid damage resulting from a loss of grip.

I would also remove the damaged one first, so you can transfer over the replacement without having to set it down prior to fitting.

Use a marker pen to draw a line through the centre of the securing bolts & hinges (include an inch of the bonnet on either side of the hinge) of both bonnets prior to removal, as this will assist in ensuring they are lined up (or pretty damn close to) at the first attempt, then tighten-up and gently close, checking panel gaps as you lower it to a closed position.

Then reconnect the washers (if they were disconnected), and that should be it done.

This job should never be complete - the day I think I've done it all, is the day I resign.
