Clio - Headlight Spring

I have been helped in the recent past with my newly aquired 03 Clio II and am very grateful.
Now I want someone to assure me I have not entered some Madhouse named Renault!!.
1. While changing a Headlamp bulb (main beam on Drivers side), I was struggling, when the wee spring which holds the bulb in place fell off and went into the housing. No amount of fishing could retrieve it. So I go to Renault to buy a replacement clip. NO WAY JOSE!!. According to them I have to buy a whole new headlamp unit - around £70. They don't carry spare clips!!!.
2. Adding insult to injury it seems in order to replace the Lamp Unit means the Bumper and Grille have to come off.

Please someone tell me this a nightmare I'm in and how I can wake up.

Welcome to my world

I'm sure someone might be able to help you out shortly, but is there any possibility you might get one in a breakers?

If you are sure the spring is still inside the headlamp unit you could try fishing with a small magnet and a piece of string - even fishing for half an hour would be much easier than takign the headlight out. If the clip has not fallen out onto the road somewhere removing the front panel, etc and retrieving the spring would still be cheaper than a new lamp or as already suggested try a scrapper or even a body repair shop who will probably have loads of busted lamps lying around.
