Central locking.. any ideas

My front driver side door won't open with the central locking, only with the key manually. (scenic 2000 model)
I taken out the lock, cleaned and checked everything is moving ok, but when i put it all back together I still have the same issue.
Obviously I assumed that i need a new locking unit, BUT when I've tested it (with the door open) the central locking does lock the unit? And it unlocked it too, only when i physically close the door it doesn't work?
Sometimes you can hear a straining noise like its trying to do it?
Any thoughts on it would be really appreciated!

can only assume that there is something wrong alignment wise....if it works when the door is open it should work when the door is closed unless something is blocking it.
