I got into my mate's bonnet last year.
If I remember, you have to jack up the front of the car (if you're a lardy like me) or just crawl under the bumper. Then you can just about get you're hand up and, with a screwdriver, flick the latches over. (it helps if you can get someone to push down on the bonnet while you're trying to flick the latch)
My mate's car had A/C and the O/S latch was a right pain!!
The cable is in two parts, if the N/S cable has broken, then you only have to release that latch and the bonnet will open. If the O/S cable has gone, then you have to pull the release lever to do the N/S latch AND flick the O/S latch at the same time, or prop the bonnet up on the side that's been released.
P.S My mate's car was a MK I Lag, is yours the same?
