Rear Window Shattered

My 2001 renault megane has been in the garage at home just over a week, go in the garage to take it out today, and the entire rear window is shattered into millions of pieces. A few bits of glass had come lose and fallen out.

How likely is it the window just spontaneously shatters while in the garage!

It was parked out on the road for a couple of hours before being reversed into the garage late at night just over a week ago - I know when I parked it up it was not like this, but could have missed it while reversing into garage (using wing mirrors rather than back window, and it was late, dark and cold). There is no signs of any other damage, and there appears to be no single point of impact of an object on the window.

This is my first car, only owned it just over two weeks, and as such, although I have fully comp with full glass cover, I have a high excess!

Had the same thing happen to an Escort once, although that was in the height of summer so I put it down to expansion. The galss had only been replaced a few months ealier, so I figured that the garage had left a shard of the old glass in the seal.

could be a faulty rear screen heater ie you may have put it on and power may have been going to it constantly causing it to do this common on 106's yes it has a automatic 10min shut off but if faulty it will break window get relays checked out

Check with your insurance company about the excess / NCB - it may well be different for glass replacement. I'm fairly sure mine is.
