Cracking noise when opening/closing doors

Hi. I've got a 2010 Lag III and recently both front doors have made a loud double cracking noise when opening or closing the front doors - driver's door much worse than the passenger's. I assume this is related to what I would call the door stay, the flat piece of metal that slides in and out to stop the door flying right round. They looked pretty dry like they had never been greased so I wapped some grease on them (couple of weeks ago) but nothing has improved, also squirted some WD40 in there today for good measure. Any ideas how to fix this please?

Ideally you need to remove the door liner for a clsoer look inside. Sometimes a good lube from the inside helps and on some occasions you need to replace the door stay.

Re: Cracking noise when opening/closing doors

Its funny you should mention this as I have it on my drivers door too. Whats funny about it is that I think I have had this problem on all of my Renaults and apart from 1 car I have had several. All Renault from when I was 17 now 47.
Im no good at fixing things like that so the only one that I did have fixed was my Vel Satis. The dealers had to change the door stay. It was about £70 if my memory serves me right.
I like to keep my cars in top order so this noise really annoys me. I did spray a load of WD40 in 2 weeks ago. It does seem a little better only doing it now 90% of the time as opposed to 100% of the time.
If you work out a fix, let me know.

Re: Cracking noise when opening/closing doors

I've recently purchased a Megane III ST with the same symptoms. The dealer told me it was a known problem on french cars, but an easy and cheap fix.

As mentioned above it is the 'door-stay' which comes in at around 10£ converted from danish crown (says google)

So you're looking at a fix at 20£ + wages for the mechanic, and I dont know your rates 'overthere', but here it (Denmark) it would be a cost of 60-70£ in total.

Re: Cracking noise when opening/closing doors

To those of you suffering the check strap clicking, I remedied mine by spraying wd40 on the strap and particularly the rollers where the strap enters the door void. Thereafter, I worked the door back and forth giving additional squirts of wd40 periodically. Eventually the rollers freed and the mechanism ran smoothly. Then I applied clean lubricating oil to the mechanism to preserve lubrication. Since then I lubricate the mechanisms with a few drops of oil every month.
The process has so far been successful with no recurrence on the four Renaults I have had over the years.
Hope this helps.
