Laguna 2 Fuel Tank Strap

Evening all,

Own an '03 Laguna 1.8 16v, Jacked it up today and noticed the fuel tank strap has corroded right through and snapped just before its secured on the offside.

Had a quick Google and could only find that this was common on the Laguna 1 too but can't find any available for the mk2.

Are fuel tanks straps available for the mk2 laguna?

Thanks in advance everyone

Hi

Like you say, this was a very common issue with the Lag 1. One of mine went, the driver side, I'm sure you can guess, the one nearest to the crud throw up by the off side wheel.

I got mine direct from Renault & was surprised it only cost about £15 or less

TBH until it's fixed I wouldn't recommend using the car most especially since its a petrol, however you could do with letting the car run almost dry, use a decent area of wood & a trolley jack to raise the tank, prior to fitting the new strap.

I'm not sure about a petrol but it was easy on my long Ex Mk 1 Turbo diesel. :)

Thanks for that mate

Yeh I've not driven the car other than out the driveway to get the wife's car out.

Went into Renault today, turns out in the mk2 Laguna's the tank straps are only available with the whole fuel tank which will set you back a whopping £456.37!

The car itself isn't worth much more than that to be honest so safe to say I wasn't paying that!

Measured up the old brace after work n popped down to B&Q and picked up some 25x4mm steel for all of 7 quid. Will get the car up on stands tomorrow take the old one of and start cutting and bending my steel.

Will let you know how I get on with it.

Well this morning was a complete success.

Cut my 25x4mm, measured and bent it to shape using the old broken one as a template as the end with the bend was in perfect condition.

Drilled a hole in each end, covered the whole length with foam/rubber tubing I had kicking about for a bit of protection for both the tank and the strap and bolt it up.

Total spent 7 quid. Get it up ye Renault! Lol

Can't remember the exact size I'm afraid mate I didn't take a note of it.

The metal came in a 2M length, I took a quick measure and cut it long so I had enough to get the 2 bends.

Drilled a hole on the inner end that bends round the tank, mounted that and then marked the location of the 2nd hole.

Drilled that, covered the whole bar and bolted it right up. Was doing pads the other day and had a wee look, looks spot on if I do say so lol

Apologies that's all the info I have

For information:

I used SS316 flat bar bought from metals4u 30mmx3mm in a 2m length, bent and drilled as required. I also used a bike inner tube (using spray grease) to cover most of the length for protection of bar and tank. (Total materials £16)

Required length 1.16m cut using dremel (hacksaw wouldn't hack it!)

Also note: the bolts securing the strap actually bolt the tank up and the tank is supported by these, the strap is to account for deformation of the tank bottom due to weight of fuel. The bolts require a 12mm socket and due to corrosion are a pain to get off. Also on mine the handbrake cable on the driver side gets in the way of the bolt on the drivers side.

The job can be done using a pair of ramps and reversing the car on to these and with a good piece of timber 6"x2" length 2 feet the tank can be supported by car jack.
