Battery Compartment Rusted.

Been having problems with my girlfriends Megane Cabriolet 97 R reg. First of all I have had a leak for months, which floods the drivers footwell, if I leave the cover off.
One of the Belts is slipping and making a noise.
Car is dead intermittantley.

The car wouldnt start on saturday, so I jacked it up and tapped the starter motor with a hammer. It started.
Replaced the battery, as it was few years old. When replacing the battery i found loads of leaves and crap in the battery compartment. I also found loads of rust, which crumbled away. I could feel a bit of plastic under the rust.
I assume this is where the water is comming in.
Am I best to clean away all the rust, and rebuild it with fiberglass. Has anyone else had this problem? and does the battery compartment drain into the wheel arches?

Thanks for any Help

When the battery tray rusts into holes its very likely rainwater will spill into the drivers footwell. As you say the best way of repairing it would be something like fibre glass or use a bridging filler such a Fibre-Fill. It may also be worth having the alternator out put checked as overcharging can cause battery acid to be expelled causing corrosion.
If the starter motor responded to a sharp thump it sounds like either a duff connection or faulty starter solenoid
