Water leak Clio - not the usual sunroof

Hi,

iv a 5 door clio 04 reg, and its like a sieve, the water comes in at the top of the A-pilars, i thought this was from the sunroof so having taken all that out and siliconing it back in i thought would solve the issue.

Well no..

The drains are also clear...
and no its not the scuttle panel as ive equally spent a weekend dismantling that and putting it back together to no avail

So after getting someone to pour water onto the car various points it is the roof gutter / seal, there is a small cut out in the metal at the top of the a pillar and it drips down there into the lower door seal which then runs on the inside of the seal onto the headlining and down into the floors.

anyone know any ideas to fix this? i've looked for seals online but all i can find is second hand ones, which look in worse condition than the ones i have fitted already, i can't find new ones anywhere, should i just silicone the s*** out of it?

i am sick of the car stinking like a nomadic diseased 3 legged cat with half its fur missing covered in stale yoghurt and horse crap to the point i want to sell it after a generous dousing of fabreeze.

if anyone else has had this problem please let me know how you solved it,

Thanks

well the cat is now dessicated and decaying under the floor mats somewhere... I can smell it, as for the leaky French turd its still leaking anyone have any ideas before i get the silicone gun out?

interestingly and amusing at the same time, it was -4 the other night and after a night of rain the mats were like an ice rink, made for an interesting drive... it still frigging stinks tho! :hurl:

This is why I never want another sunroof ~ they were *ALL* a P.I.T.A. in some way or another.....

Had a bugger about with mine it is the front corners of the sun roof think it's getting under the plastic that runs round the outside it is then running along the pipes for the drains and wetting the head liner at the top of the A pillar, now seal'd the sun roof with duct tape see if it dries if so it's a job for warmer weather. The drains are clear problem is Renaults can read, they come on the net read up on all the common faults then work there way through them just to pee owner off.

Yes sir! That's exactly where it comes from ^^^^

I fixed my other halves sunroof the other month, Clio mk2 1.2 51 plate.

I used E shape, door draught excluder. It's been absolutely bone dry ever since, even in all the torrential rain we've had.

I wouldn't use silicone as it's so hard to get perfect to guarantee a seal. I also think the excluder offer better coverage. As it's essentially squashed to a pulp when you bolt the sunroof back in. Assuring a solid seal.

@ Thread starter: The draught excluder I used was from eBay, the same stuff that's used on the frame of your house front door. Simply remove ALL old rubber seal from circumference of sunroof, clean the WHOLE area with acetone and apply the adhesive excluder.

Refit sunroof and you should be sorted for a long time.

This is the stuff:

I cut it in half, down the middle.

Hi, think I might be able to help you I had the exact same problem on my 2003 5 door mk2 renault clio managed to fix it last December.

Like you I tried the drainage pipes and they where clear after lifting the sunroof out and checking it all it all seemed fine, I was getting huge patches of water just above and under the sun visors on both sides. The problem was, the water was getting in under the plastic rim on the sunroof on the outside. So to fix this, I managed to find this really helpful video:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D0U1ORXcemI

after taking the sunroof section off tear off the old demolished seal and give everything a thorough wash and clean until you can wipe it with a paper towel and it is clean, you'll be surprised how much dirt and crap comes off of it.

For a replacement seal, I went to b&q and managed to find this gem (it comes in a cardboard box about 20x20x2cm just incase you need to find it in store):
http://www.diy.com/departments/rubber-self-adhesive-rubber-seal-for-doors-windows-l5m/1098037_BQ.prd

For £5 this is so worth it.

when putting the new seal on, I teared the rubber seal in half to get two strips. I then put one strip on the plastic that I had taken off and then put another strip on the body of the car around the rim of the sunroof. so that when I bolted the sunroof frame back on there was a very tight seal. I'm happy to say, the inside of my car has survived a very wet British winter and is completely dry on the inside.

Hope this helped!

Thanks Louis that's exactly what I think is going on with mine, seal'd for now with duct tape and as dyed out but
come warmer dryer weather and a permanent fix is on the cards, surprising how it went from perfectly dry to wet both
sides over a day.

One thing I have noticed is if you go round the sun roof
and tighten the bolts the car then becomes quieter,
drumming and rattles disappear as the roof is strengthen'd
by the tighter fit of roof to sun roof, this slight movement
could be why the seals fail in the first place.

For gods sake does no one know how to friggin read anymore

I already stated it wasn't the sunroof its even in the title

For those who know how to read, I sealed the little cut outs beneath the roof seal above doors and a pilar and no more leaks, tested generously with hose and it don't drip down anymore

Bit harsh, think the reason most of us still thought it was the sunroof was because sometimes silicone isn't the solution you need to properly replace the seal, another reason being that most of us had exactly the same problem you have. We were just trying to help mate by suggesting what worked for us :grin2: Good luck fixing it
