I like star washers and split washers, they spread the load a little

Just because a nylock nut is self locking doesn't necessarily mean the bolt can't rotate under vibration. A serated washer bites into whatever surface on which it is compressed reducing the risk. Sadly serated washers are really only a use-once fitting. Having said that you can get nylock nuts with a serated under face.

If the nylock nuts fail to do their job you can always add serated washers later if necessary.

No using the wifes cheese grater on your nuts now OK!!
