Definitely worth a try but it also depends on what type of driving you are doing. On motorway driving there can be a constant misty muck floating around from other vehicles never mind your own.
Ideally you need to fit mudflaps both front and rear as the spray being thrown off the front wheels tends to land in the turbulence of the rears.
Saab have tried to minimise this effect by fitting 6 mud flaps - 4 at each wheel and a short deflector about two thirds between the wheels on each side.
Personally I always prefer my cars to have mudflaps if only to reduce the risks of stone and salt chip damage to the paintwork.
