Angry Wind noise on a 2002 Clio driving me INSANE!!

I drive a 2002 Clio.

My windscreen was replaced at the end of December 2008 due to a huge crack. Unfortunately my insurance cover doesnít have windscreen damage so I forked out the £170-odd for a new windscreen (with rain sensors) and fitting.

Ever since having it replaced I could hear a loud whistling noise in strong winds and at high speeds. It sounds like if you run your finger around the rim of a crystal glass and the faster I go or windier it gets the louder the noise is.

I thought this was due to poor quality workmanship when fitting the windscreen so I called the company to come back out at the start of February. They removed the windscreen again and re-fitted it. They told me that it was likely to be down to a bubble in the glue used, so they gave it a good seal and assured me it shouldn't happen again.

The noise continued so I had the company come back out on Friday. Same story again and they re-fitted the windscreen. The noise is STILL happening and itís driving me crazy.

I canít feel any air coming through the windscreen and it usually happens around 65 Ė 70mph in normal conditions and less when itís windy. I canít remember ever having this problem before having the windscreen done so I canít think what else could be causing it. I looked at aerodynamic wipers etc but the noise still happens exactly the same even when the wipers are going.

Can anybody please, please help me? This really is driving me insane.

Mine had a whistle about 60/65 more noticeable in cross winds I thought it was the drivers door mirror it as a hole under it were the the temp sensor is on the left one, I stuck some tape over that and made sure the mirror was seated right if I ever fold them in, and it
seems to have gone. or I have got used to it but it was quite loud so dont think it's that.

Who would design a vehicle that falls over when you stop?

If you find a fix for your problem please let us know it will help others.

Common complaint on Saab 9-5's that have had a new screen fitted. 2 most common complaints are a pattern windscreen that is a couple of mm taller than an OE one. This extra 2mm protrudes above the roofline and whistles at speed. The other cause is a lazy windscreen fitter who practices what is called "slotting", they remove the bonding compound from the top and sides of the screen but don't clear the lower channel correctly and "slot" the screen in on top of the old bondo, this has the same effect as a screen that is too tall and causes whistling.

have you had the engineer who comes out to be a passneger in the car with you before and after their work so they can properly understand what the problem is? It would only take 5 mins and i imagine would prove your case much better.

Ralph: A good suggestion. This is one of the things I considered too as my thermostat has been giving a false reading for a long time and appears to be slightly loose on the passenger side and I have an empty hole on the driver side. Iíve tried taping these over but still the noise persists so I guess that rules that out.

saabguy: This is something I considered too but the company who replaced the windscreen have persisted that this is the exact same specification of windscreen as was fitted. Theyíve been out a total of 3 times to fit the windscreen so Iím doubtful of slotting being the cause, Iím sure by now they would have gotten fed up and fitted it properly.

TheCleanerLeon: Brilliant suggestion. Itís just a case of having the engineer come out when itís windy enough. If Iím 100% honest the noise generally happens at around 65 - 70mph when itís particularly windy and I would Ďimagineí it happens in less windy conditions when travelling much faster Ė of course this isnít something I would do on a public highway.

They are actually coming out again tomorrow but unfortunately Iíll be at work so I wonít be able to take them out in the car to show them. After this final opportunity to resolve the problem I will insist on TheCleanerLeonís suggestion of them coming out in the car with me.

My only concern is them trying to fob me off telling me itís something other than the windscreen. Iím positive that itís either the windscreen or something done during the fitting of the windscreen as the problem only occurred after their attendance.

I will update again after their further visit tomorrow, thanks for all your help.
