laguna 1 lock problem

The drivers door has been stuck locked shut for a few days.
I tried pulling the rod which comes up to the button at base of the window but it came away when I was pulling at it with pliers.
After much effort I got the trim off even though door was closed, applied WD40 and got the door at least opening from the inside pull lever with a bit of pushing & pulling.
Probably need a new lock I thought, i'll see how this one works. From the open door edge I poked about to see how the catch rotated. Bad move - it was in the shape of a backward C (open) now it is shape of a U (closed).
I can't move it back, which means the car door can't be shut never mind locked as the closed catch just bangs against the metal bar on the door frame.
Please help, I want at least to close the door tonight, at the moment it's on the street with door ajar, inviting anybody to get in.

I've attached some (poor) photos but hopefully you can see.
First photo shows position of catch now (closed), second photo shows where I want to be (open)
