I had similar trouble recently
The "Scenic" word badge comes complete on a backing strip which is also a template for spacing the letters in the whole word which are individually adhesive (and not resuseable) which is why it's so expensive.
I found this out when a toe rag keyed my boot lid and i had it repaired. Like u i thought it was expensive for a badge until the bodyshop manager took me into the workshop and showed me the badge itself and a fitter putting one on a Megan. Getting the spacing and alignment right with the whole word in its template looked tricky enough (its a instant grab adhesive) but without the template or doing a complete word, trying to stick individual letters on to look right would be a nightmare.
One thing he did clearly instill in me was not to pressure wash the badge as the sticky bits although clever technology are not huge and water at 120 bar won't do much to help adhesion.
