sorry to drag up an old thread an all that, but my lag failed on the lights too, i didn't want to fork out some cash and so a rub down with wet/dry and a final smattering of brasso has worked brilliantly! Thatks guys, you've saved me about 65!

I have just tried this - got some 800, 1200 & 1500 wet & dry (Halfords), bonnet up and masked the sides and lower edge, rub down using circular motion with the 800 (might need 600 id pitting is very bad), dry off to ensure surface is even and pitting is removed, then rub down with 1200, repeat with 1500, and finally polish. I used toothpaste followed by T-cut and the result is quite pleasing, especially if you finish one before starting the other so you can see the change. To restore both lights took about 2 hours in total. They are not quite as new but not far off and good for the next MOT. I'll be interested to see how long they stay like this - perhaps new ones have a protective lacquer on the surface and I've removed it. If anyone did the job a year ago please let me know how they stand up to time.
