hiya and welcome to the forums.

i had a simular prob on my old volvo..try this

unlock car
open boot
spray boot catch with wd40
with boot open lock then unlock car using central locking(may have to do this a couple of times)
try to close boot

if no joy then you may have to take off the panelling and try to open/close locking mechanism manually.

it worked for me...hopefully it will for you too.

Is your reg plate screwed or stuck on? A common problem is bl00dy dealers screwing the plates on. The car comes out of the factory all shiny and new with an anti-perforation warranty and a coat of wax. So what does the dealer do? Rams 2 bl00dy great screws through the boot

The problem is that the screws, especially sh$tty self-tappers, can be an ideal ingress for water. And what's generally behind the reg plate? The locking mechanism

I had exactly the same problem on my missus' Rover. Took the panel off and cleaned/greased the mechanism. It was obvious that moisture had come through the screw holes so I bunged a great load of Waxoyl behind the plate and on the inside of the panel. No more problems

This has jogged a dim and distant memory of the problems that I had with my original M reg Laguna RXE.

Possibly a daft question, but daft enough that you may not have looked: Is the striker plate still actually there? The screws used to work loose over time on my old car, initially resulting in the boot latching but not being level with the wings, and ultimately resulting in the screws coming out completely and the plate dropping away. Of course, at this point, the boot would refuse to stay shut, and I had to unscrew the interior boot trim to locate the catch and screws and refit them.
