'Proper' phase 1 wings are different - they're externally identical but don't clear the back of the phase 2 headlights properly and have sockets mounted in the fronts to receive the ends of the cosmetic strip that goes under the lights, which I think is mounted differently on the phase 2 - however, phase 2 wings are universal, and wouldn't create a problem when mounted on a phase 1 car, which is probably why some sellers are selling them as suitable for 1994-2000 models.

I wouldn't be surprised if many late (97-98) phase 1s were mounted with the phase 2 wings from the factory - that's certainly the case with the frame the headlights mount on, which is why some phase 1 owners have more trouble than others switching to phase 2 headlights - I was unlucky in this case and had to modify the lights themselves to make them fit.

I've finally got to the bottom of this.

I forgot to bring my camera to work today() but I have a phase 1 and phase 2 wing here next to one another and the only difference is the way the bumper is fitted to it.The phase 1 wing has a metal clip spot welded to it and the bumper slides into the clip, the phase 2 wing doesn't have the clip, the bumper slides on to a plastic rail clipped to the wing and then is bolted through the wing.

I'll try and remember my camera tomorrow and get some pics posted up.

I'd rather push my Alfa than drive a BMW....
