I have a 52 plate Clio Dynamique with a rattly squeeky sunroof which absolutely drives me bonkers; it is akin to some kind of torture when the car is being driven along our roads, even nice smooth motorways are not immune to causing the odd squeek or seven.

I have mentioned it to the dealer when it's been in for each service whilst under warranty and their response has always been "no fault found" stamped on the invoice. Now the vehicle is out of warranty the dealer quoted approx 500 to remove the sunroof cassette, reseal it and replace.

This is a major job, as the headlining needs to be removed to allow full access to the cassette (why its a cassette i dont know).

Having had a look myself by removing the trim from around the opening, I discovered a ring of bolts which I was able to tighten as some had worked loose. HOWEVER, care is needed as the bolts tighten into the top 'half' of the roof which is a plastic type material and no doubt there will be threaded brass inserts moulded into the plastic which if overtightened will either strip the threads or begin to spin within the plastic. Both results are potentially disastrous, I tightened the studs on my car in sequence (as if I was tightening a cylinder head) and was careful not to overtighten them for obvious reasons.

I too posted a thread on this topic but i cant find it any more; a guy in Australia posted a reply with a pdf file which gave detailed instructions for removing the roof. It is a big job for sure and you'd probably need to be able to do the job under cover.

The fitter at the Renault dealer said (on the QT) that they are renowned for this type of problem and there have been numerous mods on the cars. His advice to me was either live with it or sell the car. Hmmmmm. And Renault customer services deny there is a problem to you, Hmmmm again!

The roof is made by a firm called Webasto, and i contacted one of their recommended repairers local to me. they were loath to touch the car and referred me back to the dealer and basically said the same as the renault dealer fitter.

Incidentally, whilst we have been enjoying the hot weather the roof hasn't creaked at all so I put this down to the sealant expanding with the heat and filling the gap. It is so much worse in winter!

The whole experience has persuaded me never to buy another car with a sunroof in whichever make it is...hardly use it anyway with the air-con that is in most cars these days.

I really do empathise with you and hope you are able to find a solution, if you do please let us know!

Does anyone know what type of sealer is used and if it is readily available? Am trying to think about plucking up the courage to tackle the job, but at the moment feel it will all end in tears.

Oh the joys of owning a motor car
