okay so now I think have stuffed it up big time. I tried and tried with the hinges. I have the boot locking pins down as far as they will go and still the damn thing was rubbing, so I took the angle grinder it. I took off exactly 2.5mm. It was a bit better but still rubbing. So I took off another 1mm. My boot door is now 3.5mm narrower than it started life and it is not perfect. It has to be something about the hinges. If I follow the roof line when boot is closed there is a step of 5mm from roof to boot door and I am not pleased about this. If it was just visual I would be okay, but the damned thing will not open or close properly.
On the up side, the speedo has come back to life!!!!!!!!!!!!
