Citroen use the multiplex system as well. Our Picasso had it, a colleagues brand new C5 is the same - he wired his tow bar himself and that he said appeared conventionally wired!

I haven't had the opportunity to compare them side by side, but I've had the lights out of my old phase 1, and had one of the lights out of this one (the dead fly episode.) The shape, fixing points and connectors do appear to be identical, though I couldn't swear that the pin-outs are the same.

Dead Fly! Iv'e had a dead (and still perfectly formed) Daddy Bloo@y Longlegs in one of my headlights for six months now

The Phase 2 didn't come out until mid 2005, so yours will be a phase 1. The most obvious difference is the front: The Phase 2 has a split 'Megane II' style radiator grille with the Renault badge in the centre of the grille rather than on the bonnet. the headlights are wider at the edges of the car and narrow towards the centre, where the opposite is true on the phase 1.

Here's a pic of my phase 1 (left) and phase 2 (right) next to each other.
