Re: Sills MOT test

Nice Thread. As others have pointed out, sills become an part of the test part because of their close proximity to what Vosa describe as prescribed areas. A prescribed area is the structural area in a vehicle that supports key components. This area extends for 300mm from a mounting of a key component. The Key components that result in the sills been inspected are Steering and suspension, seat belts and driver control. For example a seat or seat belt bolted to the floor beside the B pillar in a clio, we need to imagine a sphere with a radius of 300mm or diameter of 600mm eminating from this bolt, any metal which falls in this imaginary sphere needs to be sound and strong to pass the mot. Beyond this the tester is on weaker ground, but because of the front and rear suspension, front and rear seat belts and drivers seat very little of the sill falls outside a prescribed area.

I hope this helps Igg MOT tester till I find a better job

Re: Sills MOT test

Thanks for all the info guys, however I have scoured the inter net to find out what a sill actually is ? (thick aint I ) no seriously the corrosion on the clio my wife owns is on what can only be described as a strip of metal that runs along the car from the front wheel to the back on either side (is that part of the sill) theres just a small amout of the strip that has corroded the rest is fine. Am I making any sence guys ?

Anyway once again thanks for your help.

Re: Sills MOT test

Sounds like your talking about the sill joint, this is subject to the same criteria that Igg-Hiss goes into.If it's within 30cm of a suspension mounting, seatbelt mounting or a seat mounting (if the seatbelt is mounted to the seat) and it is deemed to be excessively corroded then it will fail.Any member/support panelling within 30cm of these mountings becomes the 'prescribed area' that the rules cover. There are also criteria that any corrosion that effects braking and steering can be failed, but for this the area has to be absolutely fubar'd!.

I'd rather push my Alfa than drive a BMW....
