Re: How much should this cost to repair? (Megane I wing)

Ha ... I'm afraid I've been round the web and doing car/bike stuff too long to believe ANY job being described as "simple", above maybe the level of a tyre change or topping up the washer fluid. Even swapping the oil filter is a mare on this machine after all.
Hell, someone tried to con me that a gearbox swap was "quick" and "simple" before... now, it was on a machine where it's much easier than the Megane, and I managed it - over the course of two days and much skinned knuckles, sprained muscles and bodging - but would I again? Not without significant investment in an engine hoist and getting a mate or two to help in return for "free" beer, which kind of elevates it out of my personal simplicity zone. Maybe the panel change is simpler. Maybe it's not...

Maybe getting the panel off/on is a matter of bolts ... but where are they, and how easy to get at? What special tooling might I need above and beyond a socket set, ratchet, and my fairly limited selection of spanners? I still haven't had an answer to how the bloody hell you bolt up the horn after all (another thing that the haynes manual doesn't make plain) and that should be a simpler job.

As for repainting it.... no. Flat no. Me + automotive paint, and particularly my available work environment + automotive paint just don't mix very well. Best I could manage is our family home garage (or if I sweet talk my Lambretta-collecting uncle, provide copious dust sheeting and promise to always do up the triple locks, my nan's) where I've done a bumper before, careful as you like, but even that turned out dog rough and peeled before too long. If it's not going to come pre-painted in the right colour, i'd rather leave the blame for a bad colour match, bad blends, runs, uneven lacquer, rubbish grain to the metallic stuff, peeling etc to someone who's expecting payment and is supposedly trained at the job.
Currently in tahrey's garage:
Honda CG125, Scott Voltage MX5, dirt, lots of random bottles and tools, porktastic Clio III DCi, dodgy shelves...
tahrey is offline
