Yes i've had exacly the same thing at the door handle. Did not get anywhere with Renault. They said it was to do with slight play in the handle - so mechanical not just corrosion. It is an aluminium door/ I think it is where aluminium meets steel. Now my car is the age it is not bothered about it - my view is if engine is working and all main electrics functioning then I'm happy.

Still agree with you - shouldn't be corrosion. I wonder if chips away would repair something like this. Can rust cure be applied to aluminium. I think the aluminium goes white and flakey.

Traditional rust treatments won't work with aluminium, and tbh, any traces of aluminium oxide just needs sanding out before painting.

Aluminium corrodes in a cosmetic rather than a structural way (like steel/iron), as the aluminium is exposed to air & water, the oxide is formed which then becomes inert and won't corrode any further into the metal. However, it does have the effect of weakening the paint, which, when exposed to the elements, will fall away, thereby exposing more fresh metal to react.

Steel/iron would do the same, but would continue to react through the panel's thickness if left unchecked.

Personally, I wouldn't hold out much hope for a warranty claim being successful, if the car was 2-3 years old - then there's more chance of claiming a flaw present from manufacture, but its worth pursuing, so long as you adopt the 'nothing to lose' mentality.

P.S. the simplest way to check what the door's made from is by using a magnet - if it doesn't attract, its not steel.

This job should never be complete - the day I think I've done it all, is the day I resign.

Thanks for the views guys. I'll let you know what the outcome is - mightn't be for a while though.

I've noticed that Safranes like to rust around the boot handle - perhaps the door handles will become the trademark rusting spot of the Vel Satis...

Hi Luke,

I didn't catch sight of your rust post when you first wrote it a while ago, doh.

Keep us posted with how you get on with Renault.

Let's hope, as you say, that door handle rust doesn't become the Vel Satis trademark as they all get older!

Re: Vel Satis bubbling - is this what they'll become known for?

Probably not worth bothering to contact Renault about it.
In 2005, even though the corrosion checks each year had been done, I noticed small spots on the arches of my phaseII 1999 Scenic. Only 6 years old, well within the warranty so I got it checked out by Renault.

They claimed that it was stone chips that hadn't been treated. Not true, the rust was coming through the paint.

No work was done on the car except by Renault and when I bought it the owner said that Renault had touched up a couple of areas on the rear sill.

Then they got their little micrometer out and claimed the paint thickness was outside of Renault specification by a few microns, so it must have been resprayed by someone else.

I contacted Renault directly, they just said it was up to their dealer network to make these decisions, so wouldn't help.

Afterwards, I noticed scores of similarly aged Scenics with the same issue. Coincidence I suppose.
