cards should still be fine, as long as they are blank stock (i.e. they've never been paired to a car.) They'll be old stock before Renault brought out the new security measures that mean the card has to be pre-programmed for the car before it's sent to the dealer.
Renault now insist on pre-linking the card to a specific car before they ship it from the factory, but the car still needs to be programmed to recognise the card. Previously, the dealers held a stock of blank cards, and would perform both sides of the pairing.
Whichever way you go, you still have to find someone who has the Clip diagnostic computer (dealer or independent Renault specialist) and get them to pair the card to the car. All cards that you wish to keep 'live' need to be present for the programming. I think you can have up to four cards per car.
My 02 Privilege missed out on cruise control too. I think it was standard with the auto box but not the manual
