The Vel Satis was voted best towcar in its class in 2002 (or was it 2003?) and will tow up to 1600Kg. I saw a photo on a website and the caravan it was towing looked huge. The max trailer nose weight is 75Kg, but that's no problem as one usually tries to load them to about 50Kg to get the balance right.

It will take either a swan neck towbar or detachable, but the flange type is a no-no as it could interfere with the reverse sensors (or so I've been told). I'm after a detachable one - a bit pricier, but doesn't spoil the cars looks. You have to have a hole cut in the bumper, but that is very low down on the underside, can't be seen and you also get a part from Renault to go with it. I think that part is some sort of plate to cover the hole. We are going away in Easter so I have to get one fitted before then. BTW if you get a swan neck or detachable, I don't think they accomodate the old bar type stabilisers, so you might have to invest in an Alco stabiliser (or equivilent) like I've been forced to. In fact I bought the car for its towing abilities as well as its luxury and ridiculous price.

Glad you're pleased with the car James - I've had mine 6 weeks now. I've had to convert it to gas as I intend on keeping it quite a long while and it just drinks fuel. Only problem I have is the memory mirrors always forget!! Oh well, such is life

Let us know how much it costs to repair the ding on the rear wheel arch 'cos I have one too!

Edit: You can get towbars specifically for it - yes, they are a bit pricier that for a Mondeo etc. I've had 2 quotes from nearby fitters quoting roughly £250 for the swan neck and £400 for the detachable (those prices are for double electrics, single should be a bit cheaper). Let me know if you find any cheaper. Oh, neither company said "a Renault what?" which either means they know what one is or they don't care what one is. I don't see a real problem anyway - the company that converted my car to lpg had never heard of one either, but they seem to have done a good job. Only time will tell.
