We've gone for the Harmony warranty again. Though as we'd let it lapse by a couple of days, I think they've done it as a "Renault to Go" warranty instead. I hope the cover is the same - I'm still waiting for the paperwork. My advice to anyone considering taking this up: Make your decision before the car goes in for its first MOT.

Extended warranties are a real minefield. According to one of the companies (though the guy was trying to sell me his policy) some wriggle out on a 'wear and tear' clause, which basically makes it useless on covering non-consumable items that might just fail with age or use - i.e. most of the bits on the car. Of course his company didn't, so I asked him to send me the bumf.

On reading the small-print, I discovered that they refused to cover things like switches and wiring looms - i.e. precisely the sorts of things that are likely to go on a Renault. What's more, it was going to cost 240 for the year and nearly double that for two, when Harmony was only 300 for 12 months, or 500 for the two years cover.

The Harmony warranty claims to provide the same level of cover as the factory one, and if I take my car in with a faulty switch under the factory warranty, I know they'll replace it free of charge. One of the things we had fixed on the last Clio was a faulty wiper stalk, and the Harmony warranty covered parts and labour without hesitation. Looking at the items covered (and not covered) in the third-party warranty I was considering, I doubt this item would have been included. Prior to discovering we had the warranty, the dealer was quoting us a bill of over 200 quid for parts and labour. In the end, it cost nothing.
